Lets be honest moving is a stressful time, we all just wish we could press a button and everything was done and we were in our new home. However it is not quite that easy even with a good removals company there is still stuff that has to be done. So we have put together our top 10 tips for moving house.
1. Hire a professional removals company
Take the stress out of moving and hire a leading removals company in your area. Yes you may save a few pounds doing the move yourself with friends but after a few breakages them savings don’t seem so good when you have a few hundred pounds worth of damaged furniture and a friend you don’t want to see for a while as he’s dropped your grandads antique book shelf!
2. Plan your move
Don’t leave organising your move till the last minute as it will just be one chaotic stressful time where stuff is more likely to get broken or lost. Start getting quotes from removals companies 6-8 weeks before your move, this gives you peace of mind that you have a date booked in and also by booking in advance your are more likely to get the exact date you want.
3. Visit your new area
If you have free time during the week or at weekends take the time to go check out the new area you are going to be moving into. Sample the restaurants, check out the local pubs, see what there is to do in the area. This helps you to get to know your new area and on them stressful nights around the move you will know a few nice places to go and chill out.
4. Change your address
You would not believe the amount of people who forgot this obvious tip! Make sure you let everyone know your new address a week before your move so your mail reaches you at your new address as soon as you move. For a small fee you can also get the Royal Mail to forward mail to your new address, you can find more information about that service here.
5. Get rid of them things you never use!
Moving house is the best time declutter as you have got to get all your stuff out and move it anyway. If you have not used it for a year stick it in the bin as it is just going to stay in a cupboard at your new house for another few years doing nothing but filling up space. Also why pay extra to move stuff that your never going to use.
6. Make sure you budget
There are quite a few costs associated with moving so it is important you budget to make sure you don’t forget about any costs. To save money make sure you compare costs for all the services you need, this is what you can make sure you are paying a fair price for a good service.
7. Label everything
There is nothing worse than having a bunch of boxes with no idea what is in each one. The easiest way to label your boxes is to simply write on them what is in the box and which room they are going to in your new house, that way they can easily be put in the right room.
8. Hire a reputable conveyance solicitor
The conveyance solicitor will be handling all the legal aspects of your property transaction so it is really important that you make sure you take your time and find the right one. Hiring a good solicitor will help make sure the whole move goes to plan without any major hiccups.
9. Pack an ‘essentials’ box
Unless you travel light it is unlikely that you will have every box unpacked on your first night in your new home so it is a handy tip to pack an ‘essentials’ box which has a few goodies in that you just can’t survive without, such as tea and biscuits. Other recommended goods are a first aid kit, toilet roll, kettle, a few plates, knives and forks can make your first night a bit more comfortable.
10. Use good quality packing materials
You are not going shopping so a few carrier bags will not do for this job. Boxes will be your new best friend for moving your house, there’s a huge range of them on the market and if you have chosen a good removals company they should be able to offer you good quality boxes to use. You will also need tape, bubble wrap, labels and a pen, just a few things that will make packing that bit easier.
